Easter and Spring Themed Succulent Terrarium and Fireplace Mantel

Easter is right around the corner and at my house I try my hardest to make it look somewhat festive.  I think last year was the first time I purchased some Easter/spring decorations I bought on clearance after Easter.  So this year I knew I wanted to keep that tradition up but add some subtle Easter decor throughout the house.  I'm not a huge fan of decorating the ENTIRE house for the holidays and spending hours doing it.   That's a lot of pressure and takes up a lot of time.  One of my favorite stores is Cost Plus World Market because they have such a fun and eclectic decor, ethnic foods, stylish house ware items.  You can spend hours there.  When I decorate for the holidays I like to keep it simple, and my rule of thumb is keep the holiday decorations to only 2-3 areas in the home.  Like the front porch, my entry way to the living room, and fireplace mantel in the family room.

One of my favorite things is to bring the outdoors in.  We love plants in our family and anyway I can add a bit of greenery in our house, I'm all for it. That's why I thought it would be really fun to create a seasonal terrarium where I add things to it during each holiday to make it festive.

I purchased the Recycled Glass Terrarium which is the perfect size, it's not too big or small.  They have a bag of the most amazing colored moss, I loved all of the different textures.  I went to my local nursery and purchased three succulents in different shapes, sizes, and heights; and then put in my gold little cotton tail rabbit on top of the emerald velvet moss.

*How I made my terrarium: Put a 2" layer of rocks at the bottom, layer 1/4-1/2" of charcoal, 2" layer of dirt, dig holes for the plants, press down the soil around the plants to make them more stable, wet moss with a mister, and break it up and place it on top of soil and in and around the plants.  Water once every two weeks and make sure it gets some indirect light.

The next place I decorated is the mantel in our family room.  We have this pretty good size Zamioculas Zamifolia or commonly called ZZ Plant (seriously one of the hardest indoor plants to kill and does great with low light) and thought it would be fun to add some plum blossoms in the plant and love the way it turned out.  I cut the ends of the blossoms and and just inserted them into the soil.

Aren't these German Nesting Eggs adorable?!  I got one in extra large, large, and small.  I love the vintage Easter scenes on them.  I was thinking of starting a new tradition this year where instead of doing baskets, we'll stuff Amelia's Easter gifts into the eggs.

One of the easiest things I did to decorate was create this spring vegetable banner.  The sad thing is they don't sell these straw and string covered veggies online.  You can only buy them in store at Cost Plus World Market.  They come in pack of three.  I found radishes, turnips, carrots, plums, and peas.

To make this SUPER easy banner I took some bakers twine (about six feet of it), a thick leather needle and poked a small hole through the top of the foam base of each vegteable and strung the twine through.  I spaced the veggies about 2" inches apart and made sure there's was a generous amount of twine left on each side so I could tie it on the ends.  I didn't have to make any knots in between the veggies because of the foam base, they don't slide around on the string.  This took me 5 minutes to make and I love how fun and whimsical it looks.  Everything else on the mantel including the felt rabbit, chicks, and eggs are my personal decorations.
