Tips to Beautiful Summer Legs from a Pale Girl from FrySauceandGrits.com

Summer is here and I'm all about showing more of my summer legs!  BUT, there's one thing that I find really important about my legs and that is taking care of them.  Now I try to be as low maintenance as I can be, but there are a few things I'm not low maintenance about and one of those things is my skin.

I grew up learning from my parents the dangers of not protecting your skin from the sun and even saw my dad take several trips to the dermatologist to get skin cancer removed from his body (this scared the crap out of me).  My mom has worked in the dermatology/cosmetic surgery industry for many years and has taught us girls the disadvantages of premature aging (sun spots, wrinkles, discolored skin, sagging skin) which also solidified these strong beliefs of the importance of protecting your skin.  I don't want to look like I'm 50 when I'm 30!

Even when I was an adolescent I never had a desire to be tan.  I remember all of my friends would go tanning and tan was a sign of being "hot", but even with that pressure to be tan, I was lucky that I've never had a desire to be tan.

I've always loved my white skin, it's unique, it's me, and I find I get more compliments about how I can pull off being fair.  A couple years ago I went to Mexico with my family and one of the locals in the town we were in came up to me and said, "Senorita, you're the whitest person I've ever seen."  Most people would find that to be offensive, but I took it as a great compliment.  FYI, back in the early 1900's being fair was a sign of beauty and wealth.

Funny story, the one time I did go tanning due to peer pressure from friends and because I was curious turned into an anxiety filled 20 minutes and ended with a burnt back and white front (I forgot to put the lid down, oops!).

After that experience I realized NEVER again would I try to tan and try to be something I wasn't.   So I'm all about embracing what God gave you and making it work for you.  Like I said above, I try to be low maintenance and the thought of using sunless tanner every couple days seemed too much work for me.  I barely have enough time to pain my toe nails every two weeks. Can you relate?

When I got asked by #CollectiveBias to go to Walmart and pick up and use the Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion, Skintimate Mandarin Burst Shave Cream, and the Schick Xtreme3 Hawaiian Tropic Razor, I thought it would be fun to show you how I get pretty natural looking legs without having to use sunless tanner or tanning.

Here's us at Walmart getting the the products.  Amelia fell asleep in the cart, and I was trying to hold her head while taking the picture. #momfail #kinkedneck

I agree, pasty white legs aren't the most flattering, but there's a couple of things I do to get my legs looking good for the summer.

1. Exfoliate. The first thing you want to do is exfoliate.  I try to exfoliate my entire body and legs at least once a week.  This helps to remove all of the dead skin cells and will help your skin to look brighter and more rejuvenated.  You can make your own scrub, like a sugar scrub, use one from your favorite drugstore or skincare line.  I personally use the Apricot Scrub from St. Ives.

2. Shave. The next step is to remove all of those unwanted leg hairs.  I used the Schick Xtreme3 Hawaiian Tropic Razor and I love the way it was easy to grip, the moisture strips on the blade made my skin feel more smooth, and the Skintimate Mandarin Burst smelled like a plush Hawaiian rainforest lined with mandarin trees and a waterfall flowing through it.  Yeah, it was that heavenly.  I love yummy smelly stuff because it just makes you feel that more beautiful.

I just got back from going on a mini trip this past weekend with my husband's family to a very small town in Idaho called Lava Hot Springs to get away, relax, and enjoy the natural hot springs and mineral pools.  My cute sister in-law Katie and I thought it would be fun to have a little shave party at our hotel, so we did with all of our glory, no makeup, and no kids!

3. Moisturize and Protect.  Normally I put on a lotion after shaving and then a sunscreen to protect. The Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Ultra Radiance SPF 30 is two products in one because it's a lotion and a sunscreen in one!  It also has a delicious scent and a slight shimmer which gives you a nice glow.   This sunscreen has UVA/UVB protection, is non-greasy, oil free, and is water resistant.

I know a lot of women don't like to put sunscreen on their legs because they want them to be tan, but it's just as important to protect your legs as it is your face, arms, back, and neck.  I recently had a friend who went through the process of removing cancer from her knee and she talks about how terrified she is every year when she goes back to the dermatologist to get it checked.  I'd rather have white legs then have the scare of skin cancer.

4. Even it Out.  I love my white legs, but because they're fair you can see all of my imperfections like the bruises I get from doing CrossFit, cuts from my razor, and the spider veins I got from having my baby.   I found this magical product called Airbrush Legs from Sally Hansen, and it's the best stuff ever!  I use the lightest color called Nude Glow.  It's like leg makeup that gives your legs a more even coverage, kind of like what foundation does to your face.  I use the lightest color so it doesn't make me look really tan, it lets me make my fair skin look more attractive looking.

Make sure you moisturize your legs well before you apply it.  You spray it in your hands and apply it to legs.  Wash your hands after you're done applying and wait for it to dry for a minute.  It lasts all day, doesn't stain or transfer to your clothes, and washes off with soap and water.  I love how it gives my legs a glow without looking darker than the rest of my pale body.
