Bra Guide: How they should and shouldn't fit

Bra Guide from FrySauceandGrits.com

Welcome to the first post in this series I'm calling "Bra Guide"!  Where I'm going to go over every aspect of bras to fitting, sizing, breast shapes, bra types, nursing and maternity bras, bra recommendations, and the best places to find bras.

Make sure you check out the second part of this series where I go over bra sizing.

One thing you need to know about me.  I'm very passionate about bras AND making sure they fit right.  Kind of a weird obsession, I know!  This passion of mine started when I was hired to work in the Lingerie Department for Nordstrom.  Immediately I fell in love with my job and worked my way to become a certified Bra Fit Specialist and for three years I educated women on how to find the right fitting bra, how they should fit, helping them to gain their confidence back, liberating them from ill fitting bras and changing their lives, literally!  This sounds SO cheesy, but it's so true!

Let's just get it out of the way, but I'm a bra snob, just like how my sister Melanie is a cosmetic snob.  I guess it runs in the family.  When I spot a woman wearing an ill fitting bra, it makes me cringe!  I feel for you honey!  Before I started working with bras, I suffered from wearing the wrong bra size and ever since then it's been my mission to educate anyone who will listen to me about how you can take care of your boobs by wearing the right size bra!  God gave them to you, so let's treat them nicely!

To start, if you say yes to any these questions, keep reading!

-Do you have boobs?
-Do you hate wearing your bra because it's uncomfortable?
-Are you falling out of your bra at the top, bottom or side?
-Does your underwire cut into your boobs?
-Does your band ride up in the back when you move?
-Are you constantly adjusting your bra?
-Do your cups pucker or gap?
-Do your straps dig into your shoulders?
-Have you had your bra longer than a year?
-Do you feel like you're unsupported?
-Do your straps constantly fall off your shoulders?
-Do you suffer from back pain?
-Do fitted shirts fit you horribly?
-Do you avoid physical activities because of your boobs?
-Do you want to look slimmer?
-Do you want your clothes to fit better?
-Do you want to feel more confident about yourself?

If you said yes to any of the above questions, WELCOME!

I'm going to start off by showing you some great examples of an ill fitting bra on a busty and a smaller cup size gal so you can relate with at least one of them.  There's five places you need to check whenever you try on a bra to make sure it fits.  Let's take a field trip into the dressing room and we'll go over these places.

Incorrect Fitting Bra from FrySauceandGrits.com

1. Middle Front Part.  This is located smack dab in the middle, where the underwire separates your breasts.  You can tell from this picture, the underwire isn't separating this gal's boobs.  There's a lot of cleavage going on.  For all of you busty gals, it's really, really, really, really, really important that the middle part of the bra is completely flat against your skin in this middle front part.  You DON'T want any cleavage, if you do, that means your bra cup size is too small and therefore the underwire is going to gap in the front.  If you look at the underwires in the front, you can see how they're literally laying on top of her breasts in the front.

2. Top Cup. I'm going to use the same picture above to explain this part.  When the middle front part isn't lying completely flat against your skin like it is in the picture, you will get the dreaded double boob coming out of the top of the cup.  The double boob is when the cup is too small and there's no more space for the breast, so the bra indents into the top part of the breast and you have breast tissue that is loose and jiggly.  There's two ways you can do to check to make sure you don't have the double boob.  Look at yourself from the side with your bra on, shirt off, and see if you can see any loose breast tissue at the top of the cup.  The second is try on a t-shirt and see if you can see the distinct line across the top of your breast under your t-shirt.  Remember, the double boob will every time when the middle part isn't fitting correctly.

3. Bottom Cup.  This is where the bottom underwire is located.  When you get the cleavage like the picture above is showing, 99.9% of the time you will get boobage that comes out of the bottom of the bra.  To make sure the bottom cup is scooping your breasts in place, you'll want to get your bra on, bend over, take your hand, scoop your breast and lift into the cup.  Do this to both breasts.  Stand back up, you'll need to adjust the bra in the front.  After adjusting yourself, if you find you have a lot of cleavage on the top, and the underwire in the front is lying on top of your breasts, then you know that cup size is too small.

Now, let's show you how an ill fitting bra looks like on a not so busty gal.

Wrong Bra Size from FrySauceandGrits.com

At first, it doesn't look bad. But when you look close, it starts to look bad.

The top arrow is pointing to the upper part of the breast.  See how you can see some boobage at the top?  When this happens the top of the cup cuts into the breast, so when she wears a t-shirt, everyone will be able to see this very defined line of where her breast and the top of the cup is.  This is a fashion faux pas and means her cup size is too small.

The bottom arrow is pointing to the under wire that is right up and close to the bottom of her breast tissue.  You want the underwire to be at least a quarter to a half inch below your breast. Yes, that sounds absolutely crazy, but to get the best support, you want it that way.  Also, see how the bra is kind of curling up.  This is could be due to many reasons, the bra is old or the underwire is not scooping her breast.

Small bra size from FrySauceandGrits.com

4. Sides.  The third place you need to check is the sides.  You can see in the top picture, the underwire is lying on top the very end of her breast.  You want the underwire to lay at least a quarter to a half inch to the side of the breast tissue.

Loose Bra Band from FrySauceandGrits.com

5. Band.  The last place you want to check is the band in the back.  See how the band is riding high, bunching on the sides, and how it's hooking on the last set of eye notches: this means that the band is stretched out and is too loose.  The picture doesn't really show this, but her straps are placed extremely wide and are falling off her shoulders.

These are all indicators that her bra doesn't fit and it's time to get a new one.

Now the EXCITING part!  I'm going to show you how a bra should fit. I'm going to compare the bad fitting bras and the bras that fit.  By doing this you'll be able to see the big difference between bras that don't fit and bras that do.

Correct Bra Size Guide from FrySauceandGrits.com

This gal was wearing a 36DD in the first picture.  The band was the right size, but the cup size was not. I had her try on a 36DDD and a 36G (36DDDD) and the 36G fit the best, which is shown on the bottom.  I went up two cup sizes to get the right fit.

I put this gal in the Wacoal Women's Basic Beauty Full Figure Underwire bra and this is a great bra.  When I worked at Nordstrom, this was my to-go bra for busty gals.  If you're looking for a smooth look underneath your clothes and want to a full coverage bra, this bra will do the trick.  It has wide padded straps, a thick band in the back, and a quality stretch fabric for great comfort.  It also has these fabric side panels in the cups to create better shaping (soft cup bras without any seams in the cups aren't known to shape the breasts very well, but this one does a pretty good job).

Let me tell you why the bottom bra picture is the best fitting one.

1. The middle front part is lying COMPLETELY flat against her skin.
2. The underwire isn't lying on top of any breast tissue and is separating her breasts in the front.
3. There is not cleavage meavage spilling over the top in the front.
4. The bottom cup is scooping her breasts so she's not hanging out of the bottom.

How to find the correct bra size from FrySauceandGrits.com

The top picture is the 36DD and you can see she's falling out of the bottom.  This makes me sad everytime I see that picture.  In the bottom picture, see how I have a pointer finger width of space between the breast and underwire?  This is how a correct bra should fit and lay on your body.  When your underwire is digging into your skin and breasts, it's extremely uncomfortable.  To avoid that, you want the underwire to lay lower than your breast and NOT on your breast.

How to figure bra size from FrySauceandGrits.com

Oh crap, I forgot to get a side picture of this gal in her 36DD bra. Trust me, there was a lot of boobage coming out of the side and the underwire was laying on top of her breasts (ouch)!

Again, see how the underwire is not right up against her breasts?  My finger is pointing to where her breast tissue is, and see how there is about a half inch of space between the underwire and her breast?  This is how your bra should fit.

One complaint I got a lot from busty women is once they got a correct fitting bra on, they felt like the sides fit really high in the armpit area and would rub them raw.  If this is the case, if you ever experience this I would suggest you try on a smaller cup size.  If you're hanging out of that one, then find a different bra.  Bras are not made all the same, stick to your correct size, but try on different brands and types of bras until you find one that doesn't ride up so high in the armpit area.

Now, let's go back to our not so busty gal to see what a difference her correct sized bra is making.

Natori Feathers Contour Bra from FrySauceandGrits.com

Sometimes fitting smaller bust gals can get tricky.  At first glance, it's kind of hard to see a big difference.  I promise you, there is!  In the top picture, you can see the top of the under wire is really, really, really close to her breast tissue.  In the bottom picture, you can see there is more space between the top of the underwire and her breast.  Also, you can tell she's being covered more in the front in the bottom picture.  The base of the bra is lying completely flat against her skin in the front.  This gal was wearing a 32C in the top picture.  I went up one cup size to a 32D and that size fit her perfectly.

The Natori Women's Feathers Contour Plunge Bra this gal is wearing is a great bra for ladies who don't have a very full bust.  If your breasts are shallow on the top, or what I like to call  "cone" boobs, this bra will fit beautifully on you!  When you have shallow breasts, a lot of times your bra will pucker and be too big on the top part of the bra.  I love Natori bras, they're more pricey, but they're worth the money.  They use really high quality stretch foam materials that make their bras feel like butta! Plus, this bra is a really pretty for an everyday bra.  Anyway you can add sexiness to your life, I'm all for.

Bra Band Size from FrySauceandGrits.com

The top picture shows a bra band that is pretty pathetic.  It was riding up in the back and was extremely loose. Did you know, that 95% of your support comes from the band, and 10% should come from your straps?  Think of it this way:  the bra band is like the foundation of a house and the straps its frame.  Both are really important, if the foundation isn't sturdy, your straps won't be able to support the house or
"girls" alone.  You need both, the band and straps, to work together to support your parts.

Anyway, back to the picture above.  You want your bra band to fit real snug and low in the back.  What I mean by "snug" is that it should take some work to slide your hand between the band and your back.  When the band rides up high in the back, that means it's too loose.  The ideal position of the band is the lower middle part of your back.  The band should create a straight line from the front to the back of the bra.  When you try on bras it should be snug on the loosest set of hooks.  The idea behind this being that as you wear your bra, you can tighten it as it stretches out.   At first, this is going to feel really weird and uncomfortable. If you're not used to wearing a correct fitting bra, it takes a couple days for the bra to stretch out a bit, but I promise you, it will feel a lot more comfortable when your bra isn't moving all over the place.

Not everyone will want to do this, but when I buy a bra, I sometimes go down a band size smaller then I measured so I can get a more snug band.  I do this because I can get more support and the bra will stay snug longer and therefore last me longer.  A test to see if the band is snug enough is to raise your arms, jump around, do some outlandish dance move and pay attention to whether or not your bra is moving with you, if you have to adjust it after moving, you need to get a smaller band size.  Your bra should stay in place and not be loosey goosey.

Bra Band Size from FrySauceandGrits.com

The above pictures shows the underwire poking into the side of this gal's boob.  That doesn't look comfortable, and is another sign that the cup size is too small.  By going up a cup size from a 32C to a 32D, you can see the in the bottom picture, she is completely covered on the side, meaning, it fits.

SO, now that we've gone over the four areas you want to check when trying on bras to make sure they fit. Let's go over them one more time so you don't forget.

1. Middle Front Part.  This is the part in the front where the underwire separates your boobs.  Make sure it's lying COMPLETELY flat against your skin, that the underwire isn't on top of your breasts, and that the underwire is laying at least a quarter to half an inch away from your breast tissue.  I say underwire a lot, sorry.

2. Top Cup.  Make sure that there's no loose breast tissue coming out of the top of the cup.  If the middle front part of the bra isn't fitting, the top cup won't fit either.  Two ways to check to make sure the top cup is fitting is look at yourself with the bra on, shirt off and see if you can't see any breast tissue that's being forced out of the top.  The second is put on a t-shirt over the bra and check to see if you can see a distinct line of where the top of the bra is, that means the top cup is not fitting.

3. Bottom cup.  If you're a busty gal, make sure you bend over, scoop your boob with your hand, and lift your breasts into the cups.  Make sure to do this to both boobs.  Stand back up again, adjust yourself as needed.  If you're still coming out of the top of the bra after adjusting yourself and your underwire isn't scooping your breasts, then you need to go up a cup size.

4. Sides.  Make sure the underwire is covering the your entire side of your boob.  Just like the rule above, you want to make sure the underwire is laying at least a quarter to a half inch away from the breast tissue.

5. Band.  Make sure the band is very snug on the loosest hook, the band is lying in a straight line from the front to the back, and is lying in the middle lower part of your back.

I want to say thank you to my bra models, they're extraordinary women for going topless on the blogosphere. They deserve a million bucks for doing this and for being my friends.  I love you.

Stay tuned for more Bra Guide posts in the future!  Make sure to check out my second post where I explain in DETAIL bra sizing and how it works!  If you have any questions about bra fitting, leave a comment below!  I hope I educated you!

    2. I am hopeless when it comes to bras. I don't think that I have ever wore the right size in my life!! Not to mention that the very small town I live in doesn't carry anything that really fits so I normally I just go with "close enough". I often joke and say " I will have the perfect bra when I get to heaven". I think Im a 40DD but that is probably way wrong lol. Any suggestions on where I can go to even get a fitting? I have been to Victoria Secret in the next town over but it never fails I spend 60 dollars on a bra that breaks in 2 months. If you feel moved to respond you can email me LeiaKeith28055@gmail.com. Thanks Leia #hopeless

    1. Yes! I'm going to be writing a large post about this! Until then, go get professionally fit at a bra or department store like Macy's, Nordstrom, or Dillards to find out what size you are. I would do this a couple weeks before you're due. Once you find out what size you are currently, buy two bras. One in the current bra size you're in and another bra that is one cup size larger than your current size. The reason for this is after your milk comes in and start nursing, you'll need that larger cup size bra to accommodate your larger cup size. This bra should fit you for up to six months. After about six months you'll be around a cup size smaller from losing weight and the smaller bra size will fit perfect. Let me know if you have any additional questions!

    2. I am three weeks away from my due date and I am currently wearing a 36H. That is the largest size I have been able to find in any store. That's also a regular bra, not a nursing bra. To go bigger I'd have to order online somewhere. I'm nervous about buying without trying on. Do you have any suggestions about where to order from?

  6. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Im a plus size girl with no boobs. There I said it. Its always so hard to find bra's that will fit around my chest. I try to find a 48 or 50" band and small as a B cup. I know I have a weird shape. Sometimes I cant find a b cup so will take a c cup. And lately ive just been buying those stretchy bra's that you pull over your head like a delta burke? No support but I hate wearing bra's with wire.

    1. Hey Maria! Thanks so much for stopping by! I agree with you, that is a harder fit size, but it can be found. When was the last time you were fit? They say whenever you go bra shopping you should always get refit. They say on average a woman will change bra sizes six times in her life. You might be able to go down a band size, by doing this, you'll have more options in cup sizes. If you go down a band size, you need to go up in a cup size to compensate the difference. SO if you're a 48B and go down to a 46 band size, you'll be a 46C, which is alot easier to find. I recommend wires, but understand that's not always the case for some women. If you get the correct fitting band size, because this is where you get your support from, you'll be fine.

    1. Hey Jinal, non underwire bras are fine, as long as you wear a real snug band, because that's where you're going to get your support from. Non underwire bras aren't known for shaping your breasts real well. I would recommend you wear a soft cup bra that has seams, this will shape you better than one without seams. You should have different bras for different types of clothing If you wear t-shirts, blouses, tunics, and sarees; a t-shirt, a molded cup, or a soft cup bra would work perfectly.

  11. Thank you for the great information! I, too, would like a post on how to fit non-wired bras. I just can't wear underwire bras! They cause me a huge amount of pain, because they dig into my ribs- under my breasts, not on the sides like I see other people mention. The only thing I found was that people who have a high ribcage are unable to wear underwire since it sits on those rib bones. It is hard for me to get good support since I am nursing and a 34I.

    1. Brooke, this is really common. Remember, your support comes from the band, if you don't feel like that's supporting you, I would go down a band size so you would be a 32J. That will give you enough support while nursing. Some bra brands that carry that size are Elomi, Freya, and Panache.

    1. Kristin, I haven't written that post yet. But will real soon! If you fall out of the middle, your cup size is too small. I would go get fit at a department store so someone can analyze what is going on. That will give you a great foundation to work from.

  19. WOW! Talk about an informative post. Good grief, this information is so important for so many women. Including myself.. I'm pretty sure I'm wearing the wrong size bra and I can definitely tell you I've had my collection for over a year. I'm in dire need of a good, comfortable, well fitting bra. I'm one of those that likes to get out of it as quickly as possible when I get home.

Also.. random side note - I learned this weekend that you are friends with Kevin and Shelly Shallbetter. Moreover, you are the one that set them up?? Shelley is a very good friend of mine and we were talking about blogs and she asked how I knew you and then she told me how she knew you. Small world weird right?!

  21. Thank you so much for this post I have a little better idea of what to look for when shopping now. It's always a hassle shopping for bras for me and to be honest I'm always confused. Because a lot of people look at me and tell me I look like a B32 or C32 however I go to Sears and they say DD32 and then I go to another store in Canada called La Senza and they start with D32 since I'm really skinny but all the cups were way too tight on me. I don't feel very big but I know I am because I wear 32Ds everyday and I am always being poked from them, they ride up on me in the back, the straps fall off and my boobs are always overflowing at the top. I feel like sometimes the store salesmen are more confused than I am. Plus everyone telling me I look flat does not help, I always have to wear shirts now days that are Medium or Large because small is just way to tight on me.

I'm really looking forward that bra sizing post. Perhaps that will help a bit? :)
    Thank you again

    1. Finding a bra that fits can be confusing, especially when you go into other countries, the sizing is different. Some bras differ in sizing depending on the bra. For an example, you might be able to fit into a smaller cup size in a full coverage bra compared to a demi or pushup bra. The sizing post will definetly help you when it comes to letting you know what type of bras you should be trying on. Thanks for visiting!

  23. What about sport bras? Do you have any advice about those?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It depends on what size you are and what kind of activity you're doing. If you're doing high impact workout like running, kickboxing, jogging, and etc. I would recommend an underwire sports bra. If you're doing a low impact workout like Pilates or yoga you could get away with a non underwire sports bra. I'm not a huge fan of the tank tops that have self bras. They're not supportive at all. A rule of thumb, if your cup size is larger than a D I would recommend you always wearing a underwire because you'll feel a lot more comfortable moving around and not falling out.

  24. Thank you thank you thank you. I have never had the right fit but didn't know what to do to correct it. NOW I do. Cup size is too small. I'll be shopping the next chance I get for the right fit.

  25. Wow! Stopping by from Six Sisters. Currently nursing and very unhappy with my bra fit. I will be taking this article with me to reference while I shop. I am formerly a strictly underwire girl but have been using non-underwire at the advice of a lactation consultant and I feel very unsupported.

    1. Hey Flossie! I love the Six Sisters' and their site! You can wear an underwire when nursing, BUT you need to make sure it fits correctly or you could run into problems with breast infections, discomfort, and other problems that you don't want to interfere with nursing.

  26. Thank you!! Good Information to have. I have a rather unique situation. I'm full figured (I'm currently wearing a 40DDD) and a wheelchair user with limited use of one arm. Every bra fitting I've had wants to put me in an underwire that digs into the roll under my breasts. Since I can't clasp a bra in the back, I need to hook it in the front and twist it into place. Underwires dig in when I try to do this. I'm almost 60 so can't quite bring myself to go out in public without a bra but usually go without at home because of the struggle. Any thoughts? Also, how would one find a good fitter? Two different times I was told there weren't many options for someone like me.

To find a good fitter is really crucial in making your experience a good one. I would go to a department store like Nordstrom (because they have access to the largest amount of sizes and different bra types and ask for their best bra fitter, or go to a bra boutique that specializes in fitting. I hope this helps!

    1. Hey! It depends on your size. What I recommend for busty gals is to get a full coverage bra. I'd recommend soft cup bras with seams in the cups because they're a lot easier to fit and they provide great support, comfort, and they shape the breasts. A lot of women don't like these types of bras because they want a smooth look underneath their clothes. I completely understand, but if you're really busty and want to look more shaped and minimized seamed cups are the way to go. There are some non seamed soft cup bras I recommend, like the hot pink bra I feature above. Stay away from molded cups. They're extremely hard to fit when you're busty, and a lot of times the top of the cup gaps.

  33. Very informative! I'm a full figured gal (meaning extra slides on the mammogram for side boob) and I recently went and got a professional fitting. I thought I was 38B/C and I am actually 38DD. I am still getting used to the underwire, but it's nice that the girls are harnessed properly!

    1. Diana, so glad you were able to get fit. It's crazy to think that 80% of us women are wearing the wrong size bra. I loved women's reactions when aftering fitting, telling them their new size. Women think that a D and a DD are so large, but in actuality, it's not. A "D" cup isn't the same in each band size. So a "D" cup in a 32 band is the not the same as a "D" cup in a 38 band. If you want to do the comparison. The "D" cup in a 32 band is a "A" cup in a 38 band and the "DD" cup size in the 38 band is a "G" cup in a 32. I'm currently writing a post about sizing, you should come check it out when I get it done!

  35. I wondering what you would recommend for a older woman who due to age has small cone boobs, with one of the boobs which has lost a lot of its "stuffing" due to multiple biopsies. Also, can't tolerate the underwire as it rubs the skin raw underneath the drooping boobs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ruth! You're in good company because I consider myself as having small cone boobs too! I stay away from really full coverage bras because they tend to be too big at the top of the cup. The tricky part is finding bras that aren't as full, but will cover you so you don't feel like you're going to fall out. What size are you? I'll be able to recommend certain bras if I know what size you are. If you don't like wearing underwires then you NEED to make sure you're wearing the correct bra band size or it will be a bra disaster.

  36. How much of this would apply to a nursing bra? I feel like it would be extra important for the "girls" to be supported during this phase of my life as a new mama. Lol Such an amazing post! Thank you thank you for the post!

    1. A lot of this can apply to nursing bras.

  42. One thing I never see addressed when I read about bra fitting is when the bra rides up in the front. I constantly have this problem. I am always pulling whatever bra I'm wearing down in the front. It feels like they are riding up as far as they can go, and that is just not comfortable for me. I'm beginning to think that I simply have a discomfort issue, like a sensitivity thing, and that most people wear bras higher in the front than I want mine to be. I've tried to get fitted, I've tried different types of bras, nothing helps. I have NEVER had a bra that I felt comfortable in. I hate them. :(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Carol, if your bra is riding up in the front your band is too big. Try going down a band size, but make sure you go up a cup size to compensate the difference. For an example, if you're a 38D, if you go down a 36 band size, you'll need to wear a 36DD. A 36DD and a 38D are the same cup size, the difference is the 36 is smaller around. I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.

  45. Many of these ladies (like the "less busty gal", for instance) do not look like that would be their correct size! And when I did my measurements, it turned out to be a difference of 2.5", between a B and C. I currently wear a B and I feel like that's even too big, much less a C! But I'm wearing the wrong band size according to your measurements, too, so I guess that has a difference!

You have me so excited to go bra shopping now! I hope I can finally find my right size. I have the same problem that you mentioned with the "less busty gal", my bras tend to pucker at top and be much bigger than I need! I feel like people can see straight down my bra (and a clear view of the goods!) when I bend over in a lower cut shirt. So, I checked out that Natori bra, but $65 is a little much to spend on my budget! Do you have any other great bras for this type of situation?

  48. Hello. I've been trying a few years to find the right bra. And its been hell. When I get myself measured at places like Victoria secret its never accurate. I'm Asian and I don't have very full breasts. My girlfriend said that Asians tend to have saggy type. If I get the band right I can't get the cup right. I try different styles but its just not working because I know you wear different style bras for different outfits. I mainly get demi ones because I wear t shirts a lot. But I can't stand the gap I see on between the upper part of my breast and how it doesn't cover anything. So I always have to wear a sports/ tank top over when I wear v neck shirts. I tried to go for A cups but it does everything you said a good bra shouldn't do. I'm probably doing this all wrong. Any suggestions?

  49. Perhaps there is hope to finally find a bra that fits and not be stuck with yet another torture device. I absolutely HATE bras! A couple of questions: 1. The wrinkling in the right cup of the pink bra that fits right is acceptable? I always thought that meant the cup was too big? Or is this unavoidable if breasts are not symmetrical but not quite a size different? 2. I see you don't recommend molded cups for older women with large droopy breasts. Unless I wear a molded cup, no matter whether the bra is underwire or not, my breasts will just droop down over the band and hang low, no matter how supposedly supportive the bra is, and I absolutely hate how that looks. How do I avoid the saggy grandma enormous boobs around her waist look?

    ReplyDelete

    1. As an example, you know that old trick about checking how perky the girls are by putting a pencil under your breast to check if it stays in place? Well, I could put a chemistry textbook there and it would stay in place.

      Delete
    2. Hey! Let me answer some of your questions!

      1. The slight wrinkling you see in the pink bra is very common and isn't going to affect the fit. Because breasts aren't perfectly symmetrical, one breast is slightly bigger than the other. Because of this having slight wrinkling in one of the cups is really normal.

      2. You're right, I find that 90% of older women who have larger breasts don't fit into molded cups, unless your augmented. If you still feel like you have saggy breasts, it most likely coming from your cup size being too small. Make sure the middle part of the underwire is separating your breasts, and there's a 1/4" space between the breast and the underwire.

I'm planning on doing bra consultations in the near future and am looking for some beta testers. If you're interested in me helping you one on one, please email me at cfrysauceandgrits@gmail.com!

    1. Mary, a non underwire bra should fit exactly the same as a underwire bra. You want to make sure that the cups are covering you and that they're covering your sides. Yes, the middle part should lay flat in the middle. Sometimes non under bras don't scoop the breasts as much, so it's really important to make sure you're wearing the correct fitting band. From your measurements, I'd recommend you wear a 34D or 34DD. If you need help, I do online bra consultations. I'd be more than happy to help!

I have the sizing right, but they make 32GG's too deep in the wire. it rides up under the armpits so high. i can do 34G but it's too large in the back (pregnant and trying to just get bras that will last for the pregnancy as these puppies to up and down a bit!) but it's always so painful to wear bras b/c of the wires and prices keep me from really investing in a nicer one. do you know of any that are 32GG's, have lower wire in front and under armpits and are AFFORDABLE? cause husband doesn't go in for $60 plus bras. honestly, he doesn't understand why i don't just go braless..... crazy man.

    1. To avoid wires that are too wide, I'd recommend getting a balconet bra. Most of the bras you're looking at are full coverage bras, so the underwire is going to rise really high in the middle and to the side. A bra that isn't as full coverage is going to have not as wide underwire. The problem is that most bras in that size are made from UK bra brands, but if you go to Nordstrom Rack or check out Amazon, or even Ebay, you can find some great deals. I found you these bras for all under $40! Here's some bras I recommend for you: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0096R125A/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0096R125A&linkCode=as2&tag=frysauandgri-20, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E8F7GWS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00E8F7GWS&linkCode=as2&tag=frysauandgri-20, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MAPJCA/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002MAPJCA&linkCode=as2&tag=frysauandgri-20 and http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003P9WFVU/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003P9WFVU&linkCode=as2&tag=frysauandgri-20

  55. What do you suppose the problem is when the band digs into your ribs under your boobs? I've been fitted in several stores now and whether the bras have wire or not - I can't wait to take them off! They hurt! I've tried on so many bras it's crazy! The only one I can remember not hurting was the Spanx brand - but definitely not enough support.

    1. My first guess is that your band size is too snug or small. But a lot of times you're not used to wearing the correct bra size and it can feel really snug at first. My rule of thumb is when you purchase a new bra that fits is to give it up to a week of wearing so it can stretch a bit and it will be a lot more comfortable. I've fitted some women who can't tolerance pain, so anything snug against them is super uncomfortable, so that could be it to. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  56. Great post! I seem to have a lot of bra confusion these days. When I started wearing bras I was a 32 A, but when I turned 18 I switched to 32B, which seemed to work until now. I noticed that the bra would fit fine when I first put it on, but throughout the day the bra would slip down and create little flabs at the top of the breasts that would be visible through my shirts. I thought the band just might be too stretched out, so I bought a new 32B bra. But, the new one seems to be doing the same thing. I tried a 34A in the store, but the band was way too lose, but the cup fit better than the 32B. Do I need to up my cup size, and wear 30C? I'm nervous if this is the case. I have a hard enough time finding 32Bs at my local stores. Also, I enjoy my little breasts and am kind of afraid to say that I wear a C, if this is the case.

    1. If your bra is slipping down, your band is too big. If you feel like the cup size is correct, then I would try a 30C, but if you find the cup is too small go to a 30D.

  58. I've recently been measured to 70H but no matter which bra I try it never works out. It fits fine in cup (on my largest breast), the band is snug and level with the ground, it pinches my skin somewhat under/next to my arms but its barely noticeable when I loosen the straps. My problem is that the underwire pushes down on my skin/ribs under my chest. It doesn't push inwards as in a too-tight feeling but downwards and its very uncomfortable. Because of this I've never worn a underwire bra (I change between two 75D and one 70E, all wireless. But they do not give much support. I can't even buy new wireless as there are no shops near me which sells wireless bras in my size. I can't figure out why they don't fit or what I can do to find some that does, I've been to several shops that measures and guides. Do you have an idea what I am doing wrong?

    1. Stine, a 70H is a 32F in US size. Do you live in the US or UK? Because this makes a difference. From what you described, it sounds like either the cup or band is too small. I would try a 32G and a 34F to see which one fits you better. Are you wearing a particular bra brand when this occurs?

      Delete
    2. I live in Denmark, i think we use either the eu or uk sizes. It happens with several different brands but particularly with the brand 'prima Donna'. I've tried the 32G and the 34F, the 32G does fit better though it makes the fabric wrinkle a tiny bit. It still feels like the band/bottom of the cups sit a bit below the crease between breast and body, about 5mm too low. I'm beginning to wonder if I simply have a too short torso :(
My measurements are under the bust: 72cm and on the fullest part of my breast: 99cm
Thank you for taking time to help me and I apologize if my explanations are a bit off as English isn't my first language.
